Welcome to the Creative Communities blog - a place to interact around Eastern Ontario's economic development issuess. The two main bloggers are Heather Hall and Clare Wasteneys. Both of us are Ph.D. candidates at Queen’s University, supervised by Dr. Betsy Donald in the Department of Geography. Heather Hall holds a Master’s degree in planning and her experiences growing up in Northern Ontario prompted her to research issues pertinent to economic development and planning in slow-growth and declining cities and regions. Clare Wasteneys is also a doctoral candidate in Geography at Queen’s, with a Master’s degree in rural planning and development and currently on leave from her rural economic development position with the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs. Her research interests are creative economies, alternative agriculture and sustainable development in urban and rural communities. Both Heather and Clare plan on alternating entries hopefully on a weekly basis! Issues and topics to look for in the blog include: economic development challenges and opportunities in the region, recent success stories in Eastern Ontario, issues facing smaller communities and rural areas, as well as strategies for entrepreneurship development, business retention, creative economies, community resilience and revitalization. We will also keep abreast of recent policy developments at the Provincial and Federal levels. We will at times be bringing in material from leading rural and regional practitioners from North America and beyond, but we will always try to ground the discussion with local perspectives and examples. We hope you enjoy and please contribute often!
